Friday, September 15th, Jean arrives in Philadelphia. After knocking on a few doors, asking for hospitality, he decides to go out of town to get his sleep because he was advised he was in a dangerous part of the city and being in a dangerous part of any city, at night, is not recommended. So he pitched his small tent along side of an AutoRoute, near a Tourist Information booth and slept very well.
Saturday, the 16th, he slept at Jim Blair's house, in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania where he called me, Sunday morning, after mass. Jim was very generous with Jean.
Then, en route for Baltimore... Sunday evening, he had a charitable hostess, Mo O'Moore who fed him supper and supplied him with sleeping quarters. Jean was trying to circle Baltimore and wanted to take his time before he arrives in Washington D.C. He was late in writing his diary... you see...
Monday, the 18th tent night, near Baltimore, at Joppatowne. Monday night, I received an email from Roberta Douglass, in Lutherville, 12 miles north of Baltimore. Roberta is Pat Frasier's sister and Jean was expected at her home Tuesday evening. She had given me her phone number so, Jean and I had a nice conversation that evening. Roberta was so generous as to have Jean stay Wednesday night also.
Thursday evening, the 21stI received an email from Keith Shuey:
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 22:41:28 -0400
Hello,
My name is Keith Shuey and I live in Baltimore, Maryland. This afternoon, at around 4:30PM, while on a bicycle ride in near my home, I rode through Patapsco State Park--Avalon Area. Near the entrance to the park I was flagged down by none other than Jean Beliveau. Jean wanted information about the park he was about to enter.
Although my French is worse than his English, we managed to communicate well enough. Jean looked very fit, tanned, healthy, and in good spirits. He smiled a great deal. He was looking for a place to camp. I advised him as well as I could, and told him if he would meet me someplace nearby in two hours, he could overnight at my house. Jean politely declined, thanked me for my help, and asked me to send you this email to tell you of our meeting. He sends his love, and all is well with him. I only wish I had cut my ride short and invited him immediately to my house. He seemed like a very sincere and wonderful person. I admire his mission. You should be very proud of him (or very annoyed at him!). My telephone # is xxxx should you want further information. I am willing to help Jean if he needs it.
Keith
Thank you Keith! You have helped Jean a lot. But you and everybody else will have to wait till next week to know how... Isn't it suspense???
Till next week...
Luce
